The Lego Movie – Everything is Awesome!

In the LEGO world we meet Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt), an everyday figurine going on about his usual business when somehow he is chosen to be the “Special”. The Special is said to be an extraordinary being who will ultimately save the LEGO world. Though he’s not exactly sure what he should do or how he should do it, he discovered strangers (though a few of them are familiar faces to us) who soon become his comrades as they carry out a mission to take down Lord Business (voiced by Will Ferrell) and his nefarious plans to take over the LEGO world. Though Emmet has to wing it to ensure the worlds safety, he is determined to do his best anyway.

I have three words to say about this film. Everything is Awesome!! It’s one of those jingles you can’t get out of your head, and you’d better believe it’s intentional. So that begs the question, are we enjoying this film based on its own merits or it is purely for subliminal reasons? The plot thickens!

I don’t know about anybody else, but for me I enjoyed it because it was solid work and a good film! The cast helped quite a bit I must admit. The casting directors did a great job with their choices and ethos really adds that extra something if you know who’s voicing whom. Morgan Freeman as the voice of the god-like Vitruvius pretty much fits him like a glove, especially when you think of his hole role in Bruce Almighty. Liam Neeson is a riot as Good Cop/Bad Cop with his split personality. To go from being a total badass in Taken to this makes it extra special and even more hilarious. I loved how they incorporated different superheroes, giving off that hodgepodge feel. Fans of games like Super Smash Bros. would like it for this reason.

It pulls at the nostalgia strings too. As a kid I would spend weekends with my aunt often and she had a huge bucket of LEGOS just for me. My imagination would run wild with what I wanted to do, but it always went beyond what I could do with the materials I had. Kids today have it way better. Sure, I worked around the limitations, but seeing it come to life in this manner is oddly fulfilling.

I think this film appeals to adults and kids alike. Expect a thoroughly entertaining time. Everything is Awesome!!
