Review + GIVEAWAY!! Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy #1) by Ilona Andrews!

Synopsis:  Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire. Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

Review:  I had a lot of fun with this one. To be honest I had my reservations somewhat because the cover is pretty romancey, if not a bit on the cheesy side.  I am more of an urban fantasy fan but I decided to give this one a go since Ilona Andrews is one of my favorite author teams.  Well, they certainly didn’t let me down and in the usual Andrews fashion we’re brought a fantastic level of world building along with good characterization and plenty of funny one-liners.  It doesn’t feel cliche at all.  I enjoyed pretty much every page.  I think if you opened this book wanting pure romance you will be somewhat disappointed, but I think the sequels will probably do a better job of it.  And personally I prefer it that way. I’m more of a fan of the slow burn anyway.  This is a new ship I can really become invested in.

I like that Nevada and Rogan have distinct personalities.  Their chemistry is effortless and it’s actually very well done for one book.  Several of my favorite ships take a little while to build it up to the point of where it feels natural. Rogan’s back story is compelling and I think I would like to see a prequel at some point involving how he built the reputation he has through his military career. I’d love to get more sense of that character’s motivations.  He’s eye candy, yes, but there’s potential for a truly dynamic character here if we get more throughout the sequels.  Nevada, I like her somewhat less at this point, but I wouldn’t say I’m annoyed with her either.  It’s just her naïveté that will certainly chip away given enough time based on the life she’s chosen and the clear trajectory of where it’s going.

I liked the various powers and their levels and how that becomes more of a currency than actual currency. A lot of value is placed on it, but those of lesser abilities have their uses as well.  All in all i finished the book really looking forward to the sequel and the further developments for Nevada and Rogan.  It’s not insta-love and that makes it all the more interesting!

  5. I’ve been following the Kate Daniels series and enjoying it immensely. I’m a follower of this blog by email and look forward each day to checking for updates about new books and authors.

  6. I LOVE the Kate Daniels Series because it’s high on action and low on romance. I really love urban fantasy for this reason. I truly, truly loved the book I can’t talk about and every other other book of Ilona Andrews’ that I’ve read. Thanks for a great giveaway. 🙂

  7. The Kate Daniels Series is my favorite Ilona Andrews and Magic Strikes/Magic Bleeds are my favs in the series – it really shows Kate growing and learning to trust and rely on others, even if it is against all her training.

  8. The Kate Daniels series is my favorite. I love Kate and Curran and their interactions. Actually, I love Kate’s interactions with many people, and her self-talk is hysterical. Magic Breaks is probably my favorite of the series.

  9. My favorite series is Kate Daniels, Book 3 magic strikes if my favorite book because you see how far Kate will go for Curran and her friends.

  10. I haven’t yet started one of her books. Kim Harrison praised them highly and I’d planned to start them after work dies down after tax season. With the Hollows books ending, I need another good series to delve into.

  11. I love everything that Ilona Andrews writes, they are fabulous! However my favourite series would have to be Kate Daniels, it’s a great world and I love Kate’s kick-ass character and all the alphaness that is Curran. 😀
I love totally loved Burn for Me and I can’t wait for book 2.

  12. my favorite series is the Magic series of course! LOL I can’t say I have a favorite book, I have liked them all and I do need to read the last one still! 🙂

  13. I would have to say that I enjoy the Kate Daniels series the best. I enjoy all of the Kate Daniels books so I don’t really have a favorite. I also like the Edge novels as well. Haven’t read Burn for Me yet. Hoping to soon though.

  14. I love the Kate Daniels series because the worldbuilding is so rich and the characters, specifically Kate and Curran’s relationship, are so lovable. As for this new series, I was shocked at how much I loved it! Also, their online series “The Innkeeper Chronicles” is also highly entertaining. I love how all of their work contains such strong female characters. Thanks for the giveaway!

  15. I’ve never read Ilona Andrews before. Judging by the comments, the Kate Daniels series is a favorite. Maybe I’ll start there before getting to this one!

  16. My all time favorite IA series is of course Kate Daniels. I just love how the world is set up and the characters have many layers. It helps that there is a super hot Curran Lennart waiting for you. Also Kate I believe is one of the most strong and well done characters. Even though she is essentially good, she still has shades of great!

  17. My favorite Ilona Andrews series is her Kate Daniels series. I would say magic breaks is up there as my favorite (SO MUCH happens). I really like a decision Curran made at the end (not spoilery right?).

  18. Kate Daniels is my favourite series ever! Of the books Magic Slays is maybe my top (bathroom scene, need I say more?), it’s hard to pick the best, they’re all so good!

  19. Kate Daniels series is my favorite, it is just one of the best Urban fantasy series out there! I love Kate and Curran (super ALPHA MALE love him)
