No Jenks for The Hollows CW adaptation?

http://kimharrison.wordpress.com/2012/05/25/so-i-wrote-a-little-fan-fic-this-morning/

Kim Harrison posted her own little piece of fan fic this morning with a bit of a cryptic message for those of you with your brains turned on.  It looks like there’s a big chance there won’t be a Jenks. I can’t say I’m surprised since this is a new show;  if you look up the definition of “cheap” you’d see the CW logo, but it’s still pretty disappointing.

I will watch this anyway to support Kim and The Hollows.  She is just as good, if not better than the handful of authors that have made it big. I know The Hollows is my Urban Fantasy drug of choice compared to Twilight and The Vampire Diaries for sure, and we all know how big they are.  But it’s just really hard not to imagine the Hollows without our staple foul-mouthed but loyal-as-all-getout pixy.  What are your thoughts?

Update from Cheri:

Okay folks, Erika asked me to post this update.
I tooled around all the comments on FB and on wordpress. That’s over 300 comments, lol, anyway, Kim’s hubby Guy made a comment with hints as to what Kim meant on her fanfic. I took the hints, ran with it and came to the conclusion that the deal with the CW on the Hollows show is over. In other words it sank. She was disappointed of course, her rabid fans- not so much. She was describing what the writers were going to change from the series. First, Kisten would have been a witch and still dating Ivy. No Jenks whatsoever. Trent a crazed Rachel stalker and you can see what this would have done to the fans! Needless to say we are all sad for Kim and Guy and what this would have meant for them in financial gains not to mention a much wider future fan base. Would we have been supportive of her book-based show? Of course. Maybe sometime in the future someone with a better brain than the producers/writers with the CW will come along and make this great for the Harrison’s!

My thoughts: I just don’t get why they can’t just do it how it is in the books. They have clear guidelines that keep them from needing to think much. Even if they took out or modified Jenks’ character, what is wrong with what we already have? I just don’t get it…

  1. That just sucks dishwater! He’s a huge part of the charm that is the Hollows series. I will watch it as well and be supportive but I’m disappointed.

  2. How can they do it without Jenks? That takes away half the fun and leaves big holes in the story line. I’ll watch the show, but it would be so much better with Jenks.

  3. I’m not going to complain too much because I’ll probably only watch to see who’s cast. To me, there is no Hollows without Jenks. Although I loved in her fan fic this morning that Trent was in it and what he says. My little brain is turned off, so Erika, what do you think this means?

    1. Perhaps they will recast Jenks as a different character, but same personality. This time he’d just be full grown. But really considering how unfunny the CW’s shows arei, taking out Jenks may not hurt the tone of the network as a whole.

  4. Tinks Dildo!!! How can you have The Hallows with out Jenks. He is her Back-up even more so then Ivy in most cases. No Pixies!!!!! Aughhh….. I agree I will still watch b/c I am a true DIE HARD HALLOW FAN, but I can’t honestly say that this news is OK with me. I LOVE Jenks and his family and his STUMP! and all of his Tink Profanity! HOW… HOW… HOW… can they have the Hollows TV series with out my favorite little green guy! I will pray that they will change their mind. He is really important to the series to just leave out. There are very few scenes of the books that do not include Jenks or another little green companion. Sad new today in the world of “The Hallows”.

      1. I’ve wondered if they might not just make Jenks full size too. I guess that’d be better than nothing but a big charm about Jenks is that he’s such a big personality packed into a small package.

  5. So if CW is doing this, when would it be coming out? I can’t imagine this without Jenks to be honest. I’m kinda scared that they’ll ruin it like Alan Ball did with True Blood. Still, super curious, I’d have to watch. Who do you think they should cast?

  6. I’ll still watch the show in support of Kim even if the end result looks nothing like the Hollows I know and love. As long as it is entertaining as a show I can learn to appreciare it in its own right. I’ll just pretend that it’s just a coincidence that so many characters have the same names as Kim’s. Besides, Jim Butcher once commented on the tv show adaptation of his Dresden books by saying that at the very least it was a weekly commercial for his books. And a recent book signing Charlaine Harris, when asked if the tv show has ever affected her writing choices, quipped that it’s certainly affected her sales. I’m sure she’s laughing all the way to the bank. So whatever flickers across our tv screens months from now, it will very likely bring many new readers to the books. May Kim laugh all the way to the bank.

  8. I will deffinately watch this, but da%@ it, Jenks is the comic relief! And the Pixy outlook on what should be done to trespassers is so vicious that it needs to be there. And Pixing someone is what you look for with Jenks!

  9. God I am so glad I began following you this week!

The Hollows will be adapted into a TV Show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I just had an orgasm!!
Dang it I want Jenks on, but I’ll take the Hollows anyway I can get it!!

    1. Me too, haha. Though I just updated it and it looks like there won’t be a tv show after all. Kim did a fan fic of what it would have been like, which is nothing like The Hollows we know and love.

  10. Im really glad this is not going forward if Jenks wasn’t going to be included. He’s my favorite character. I know that Laurell K Hamilton went through the same thing with the Anita Blake series. If they cant do right, than don’t do it at all. You’ll end up with something like the Queen of the Damned movie.

  11. After hearing there was no Jenks, and now all the things they wanted to change, I am happy the deal is not going through. I hope some other network will try it out like the books.

  12. I am sorry, if that is what they were going to turn it into, I am glad it collapsed. I would not have watched.. To butcher the premise right out of the gate like that, I just couldn’t watch that. It would not be the Hollows. At least True Blood made it through most of season 1 before they made any drastic changes. If producers like Alan Ball and such think they have such great ideas & skills, why don’t they do something original? But of course they know they don’t, so they have to mess with something great that a talented person has poured their life into. While I agree there is the potential for increased book sales, is it and whatever “liscence” fee worth that big a chunk of your soul? Apparently the Harrisons don’t think so. Kudos to them!

  13. I was looking forward to this show..but as sad as i am ..i am also glad..No Jenks?? WTH! and Kisten a witch..eek gads. Maybe another channel will decide to do it..right.

    1. Maybe CW will still pick it up, but they have only purchased the rights for a limited time and it may go back to Kim before then. Kim doesn’t sound that hopeful about it. I still think SyFy would be best.

  14. Egads, if they’re making all those changes perhaps it’s best there’s not going to be a show then. I’m always super hesitant about my favorites making it to the screen anyway.

  15. I’m not surprised. The CW is notorious for prettying up storylines (Gossip Girl was nowhere near as weird and tripped out as the books) And Green Arrow wasn’t as shiny but there we go. The only networks that would do justice to it, would be Showtime OR HBO but with TrueBlood, Dexter and Game of Thrones and the erstwhile Vampire Diaries you could say that we don’t need anymore witchy/vampure type TV Shows. I saw good on on Kim Harrison for not looking at the money and staying true to the integrity of her books and characters. Also it’s my opinion that the books are too good to be adpated – the same goes for Anita Blake (whereas the Sookie Stackhouse novels aren’t anywhere near in the same league. I will admit that Game of Thrones is in its own league….

    1. I think SyFy could do The Hollows justice, though they have a lot of supernatural shows as well, like Being Human, Lost Girl…
